Meglitinides Medications

Meglitinides—or “meglitinide analogues”—are types of agents used to treat symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Meglitinides are part of the antihyperglycemic class.

These medications temporarily increase the patient’s insulin secretion in the pancreas. This lowers blood sugar levels. These medications are also sometimes used in combination with other medications that are used for managing type 2 diabetes symptoms.

There are three meglitinide medications currently available: repaglinide (Prandin), nateglinide (Starlix), and mitiglinide (Glufast). These medications are only available in tablet form. They are also supposed to be used with doctor-specified diet and exercise routines.

Types of Meglitinide

Oral Medications

Meglitinide medications all come in oral medication form. There is a range of available doses for each type of meglitinide. These medications are prescribed to patients to be taken anywhere between one and four times per day.

Combination Oral Medications

There is also a combination medication available with repaglinide and metformin. It is sold under the brand name “PrandiMet.” Metformin helps decrease the glucose production in addition to repaglinide’s action of causing increased insulin production. The medication is also taken orally between two and three times per day.
