Thiazolidinedione Medications

Thiazolidinediones are also sometimes known as “glitazones”. These are medications that are used to treat symptoms of type 2 diabetes. These medications raise the body’s insulin sensitivity. This helps lower blood sugar levels.

Thiazolidinediones also impact the way genes control the body’s use of sugar and fat. They may also be used to treat a type of hormonal imbalance called polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Two of these medications—rosiglitazone and pioglitazone—are currently approved. These medications are often used by themselves. However, they are also often used for treatment or alongside other type 2 diabetes medications.

Types of Thiazolidinedione Medications

Oral Medications

Most thiazolidinedione medications are taken in the form of a daily tablet. Pioglitazone (Actos) is prescribed in 15 mg, 30 mg, and 45 mg doses. Rosiglitazone (Avandia) is prescribed in 2 mg, 4 mg, and 8 mg doses. These tablets may be taken once or twice per day, depending on the prescription.

Combination Oral Medications

Thiazolidinediones are also sometimes prescribed with metformin (Actoplus Met or Avandamet) or with glimepiride (Duetact or Avandaryl). These combination medications can help patients gain better glycemic control and may have a lower risk of side effects than higher doses of one drug alone. They also come in different doses.
