Dulaglutide is a type of medication used to help with blood sugar levels. It is prescribed to type 2 diabetes patients. Dulaglutide also helps reduce the risk of heart problem concerns and stroke for those patients.
This medication works by causing the pancreas to release more insulin after meals. It then works to stop the liver from letting out stored sugars. Its final action is to slow down the rate at which the food travels through the body.
Dulaglutide is mostly known under its name-brand “Trulicity.” It is a type of GLP-1 agonist. It also helps with weight loss. The high demand for this medication has made it hard for some patients to find it. Currently, dulaglutide does not have a generic alternative that patients can buy.
Dulaglutide is only available in the form of once-weekly injection pens. The starting dose is a 0.75 mg pen. This pen is usually used once per week for the first four weeks.
The 1.5 mg pen is the dose patients are often prescribed after taking the starting dose for the first 4 weeks. Some patients may not need to go beyond the 0.75 mg starting dose.
The 3.0 mg weekly dose may be prescribed to patients who need even more glycemic control after the 0.75 mg and 1.5 mg doses. This dose is less commonly prescribed.
The largest dose available of dulaglutide is the 4.5 mg weekly dose. This injection may be prescribed if none of the other doses—including the 3.0 mg dose—have worked strongly enough.
