Jardiance (empagliflozin) is an SGLT2 inhibitor that is used for reasons such as improving glycemic control alongside diet and exercise for patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, slowing the progression of chronic kidney disease, and reducing the risk of kidney failure. Jardiance can be used to reduce the chance of death from cardiovascular causes in patients with heart failure (and established cardiovascular disease), chronic kidney disease, or both type 2 diabetes and known heart disease. This medication is often used in adult patients. However, Jardiance is also approved for type 2 diabetes in children aged 10 years and older.
Patients may choose to use Jardiance to experience several different potential benefits.

Jardiance only comes in two different strengths – 10 mg and 25 mg tablets. These tablets are taken once per day in the morning. Doses of this medication may be taken either with food or without it. 10 mg doses are given to most patients. This dose is commonly recommended for patients taking Jardiance for conditions such as chronic kidney disease, heart failure, or type 2 diabetes accompanied by cardiovascular disease. 10 mg or 25 mg doses may be used for patients receiving this medication solely for type 2 diabetes treatment. However, 25 mg is usually only prescribed if 10 mg doses are not effective enough and the dose needs to be raised for additional glucose control.
Patients taking this medication should watch out for signs of ketoacidosis – even if their blood sugar levels are not high. Patients suspecting ketoacidosis should stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. A healthcare provider should assess the patient’s risk before treatment may be resumed and the medication may need to be temporarily stopped during certain medical situations.
Jardiance may increase a patient’s risk of becoming dehydrated. This is why patients should make sure to stay hydrated during treatment and have their healthcare provider check their kidney function and hydration status prior to starting their treatment. Patients should also be monitored during use of the medication.
Some patients taking this medication may develop serious urinary tract infections. Patients should contact their healthcare provider if they start to experience any side effects of a urinary tract infection. Prompt treatment may be necessary.
The risk of hypoglycemia may also be more likely for some patients taking Jardiance. Low blood sugar is a higher risk when this medication is used in combination with insulin or certain diabetes medications. Doctors may suggest dose adjustments in order for the patient to be able to continue taking both medications safely.
A small number of patients may experience Fournier’s gangrene – a rare infection that can be severe and potentially fatal. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they experience pain, tenderness, or redness. The same goes for if the patient experiences swelling, fever, or a general feeling of illness. Some patients may experience genital yeast infections while taking this medication. These infections can usually be treated if they occur.
Serious hypersensitivity reactions can also occur in some cases. These reactions may be indicated by signs such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat. Patients should stop using the medication and get medical help immediately if symptoms develop. Jardiance should also usually be stopped at least three days before surgery or prolonged fasting.
Due to an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, Jardiance should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes. It is also not recommended for adults with type 2 diabetes who have an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 30 mL/min/1.73 m². Jardiance is additionally contraindicated in severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, and dialysis. Patients should check with their doctor before using this medication if they have been diagnosed with any kidney conditions.
Patients most commonly experience side effects such as urinary tract infections and yeast infections (or genital mycotic infections) while taking Jardiance. Patients taking this medication may notice more frequent urination when they start their treatment – making it even more important to stay hydrated. Doctor intervention is always required for a UTI and may also be needed for yeast infections if they can not be fixed using over-the-counter remedies. Contact a healthcare professional if urinary symptoms develop – particularly severe symptoms.
Some individuals taking this medication may develop more severe side effects. These side effects require immediate medical attention and may include issues such as:
Get medical attention right away if any of these side effects are experienced. This medication is also not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy since data from animal tests have shown possible adverse renal effects and the link between these effects and what they mean for humans is still unknown. Information on this medication is also still too limited to determine its potential impact on causing miscarriages in pregnant women and whether or not this medication is safe during breastfeeding or passes into the breast milk. Jardiance is not recommended in later pregnancy or during breastfeeding. Patients should consult their healthcare provider before using this medication if they are pregnant, considering pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
There are a few different drugs specifically listed on Jardiance’s label that this medication is known to have interactions with.
Patients should also be cautious about using Jardiance while taking urine glucose tests since this medication causes excess glucose to be removed through the urine and urine glucose tests may not provide accurate information about blood sugar control. 1,5-Anhydroglucitol tests may also not accurately measure blood sugar control in people taking this medication and other monitoring methods may be more appropriate. Let a doctor know of any other medications being taken or upcoming tests or procedures while taking this medication.
Store the medication at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Short-term exposure to temperatures between 59°F and 86°F (15°C to 30°C) is permitted. Keep the medication in a tightly closed container when not in use. This medication should not be frozen or stored in temperatures that become too hot. Appropriate storage containers and precautions will be taken to maintain the medication’s quality during shipping to the U.S.

No. Both medications can be used for type 2 diabetes treatment. However, Jardiance is an SGLT2 inhibitor that helps the kidneys remove excess glucose through the urine and Ozempic is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite.
Jardiance and Metformin are different medications that can be used to lower blood sugar in different ways. Metformin primarily targets liver glucose production, while Jardiance promotes the removal of glucose through the kidneys.
It has not been approved for use as a weight loss drug. However, some patients may experience modest weight loss while taking it due to the increased elimination of glucose through the urine. Patients seeking treatment specifically for weight management should discuss other options with their healthcare provider.
