Ozempic (semaglutide) is a prescription GLP-1 medication that is used for type 2 diabetes – not type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis – treatment. It is also proven to lower patients’ risk of cardiovascular issues and can reduce the progression of chronic kidney disease in some patients who have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease. This medication comes in the form of a subcutaneous injection that is designed to be taken on a weekly basis.
There are several different benefits that patients taking Ozempic may experience while taking the medication.
| Brand Name | Ozempic |
| Generic Name | Semaglutide |
| Drug Class | GLP-1 receptor agonist |
| Indication | Type 2 diabetes treatment |
| Mechanism of Action | Increases insulin secretion and lowers glucagon release by mimicking the natural incretin hormone and slowing gastric emptying |
| Dosage Forms | Single-patient-use injection pen |
| Strengths |
|
| Half-life | Approximately 1 week |
| Manufacturer | Novo Nordisk |
Patients taking Ozempic are usually prescribed a starting dose of 0.25 mg per week that is designed to be taken as an initiation dose for the first four weeks of treatment (this is not considered to be a therapeutic dose). This dose is then raised to 0.5 mg per week. A doctor may decide that this is the dose that the patient should be kept on, or they may increase this dose to 1 mg after at least four more weeks have passed if additional control is needed. This may happen one more time for a maximum dose of 2 mg per week if a doctor determines more glycemic control is needed.
Ozempic pens can be taken by the patients by completing the following steps for administration.
Injections should be made on the same day each week. Pens should never be shared between patients.
Ozempic has a boxed warning about a potential risk of thyroid C-cell tumors – including cancer. This risk was observed in rodent studies and it is not yet known how these findings apply to humans. Patients should not use Ozempic if they or any of their family members have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma. A personal or family history of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 is also considered a contraindication for use.
Patients using Ozempic who notice possible symptoms of thyroid tumors – such as a lump or swelling in the neck – should seek medical attention right away. Other concerning symptoms may include hoarseness or difficulty swallowing.
Ozempic is also contraindicated in anyone who has previously experienced a serious hypersensitivity reaction to semaglutide or any of its ingredients. Patients being treated with GLP-1 medications like Ozempic have been observed with the development of acute pancreatitis in some cases. The medication should immediately be discontinued if this condition is suspected. Patients who have a history of diabetic retinopathy may experience worsening of this condition and should be closely monitored for any related complications.
Patients should never share pens of this medication with one another. This is the case even if the needle has been changed. Concomitant use of this medication with an insulin secretagogue or insulin may put the patient at an increased risk of developing hypoglycemia – which may become severe in some cases. A lower dose of insulin or an insulin secretagogue will likely need to be used when starting Ozempic to avoid the development of hypoglycemia.
Postmarketing data have reported cases of acute kidney injury in patients receiving semaglutide. This was more frequent in patients who experienced gastrointestinal reactions that had led to dehydration. Renal function should be monitored in patients who experience any adverse reactions to semaglutide that can cause dehydration. This medication is also not recommended for use in patients with severe gastroparesis since the use of this medication has also been associated with gastrointestinal adverse reactions that could become severe.
There have been some rare reports of serious hypersensitivity reactions like anaphylaxis and angioedema. Patients should immediately stop taking this medication if they suspect these issues and seek out medical advice. Gallbladder evaluation is also recommended when cholelithiasis or cholecystitis is suspected in patients.
There have also been some cases reported of pulmonary aspiration when patients have undergone a surgery that uses anesthesia or deep sedation while using GLP-1 receptor agonists. This is why they need to tell their healthcare provider and surgeons/anesthetists that they are using Ozempic before procedures. They should also let their doctor know ahead of time about any medical issues in their personal or family history before starting the medication.
Patients taking this medication should let their clinician know if they are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant. The same applies if they are breastfeeding. Semaglutide medications like Ozempic should usually be stopped prior to pregnancy or breastfeeding. The label for this medication recommends that the medication be stopped at least two months before any planned pregnancy because there is a long washout period that accompanies it.
Missed doses of this medication should be taken as soon as they are remembered – as long as it is still within five days of when the dose was originally supposed to be taken. The dosing schedule should proceed as normal following this. Patients should skip the dose of the medication that they have missed and just proceed with the rest of their dosing schedule as normal if they have forgotten their dose for longer than five days from its originally scheduled time to be taken.
Patients using this medication have the potential to experience a variety of side effects. None of these effects are guaranteed to be experienced. However, the ones that are most commonly reported include those such as:
The most common side effects of this medication are related to digestion and the stomach. These side effects are more likely to be present during dose escalations and may resolve on their own. Patients should let their doctor know if these side effects do not resolve or if they worsen.
This medication may also occasionally lead to serious side effects for some patients. This includes those such as:
Patients experiencing any of the effects above should seek medical attention right away.
Ozempic stimulates insulin release and has interactions with insulin secretagogues and insulin. Patients prescribed a combination of these medications will likely need dosing adjustments to reduce their risk of developing hypoglycemia. This medication may also have an interaction with certain oral medications since this medication causes delays in gastric emptying rates. This means it can affect the absorption of oral medications. Patients should let their healthcare provider know of any medications or supplements they are taking before starting Ozempic.
Ozempic should be kept inside a refrigerator at a temperature between 36°F and 46°F (2°C and 8°C) until first use or until the expiration date (in which case the medication should be disposed of). These pens may then be stored at room temperature between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C) after the first use. Patients may also choose to continue storing their pens in the refrigerator after first use. However, all pens should be disposed of after 56 days following the time it was opened – whether or not medication still remains within the pen. Patients will have to be careful to never store these pens near their refrigerator’s cooling element or in excessive heat/sunlight. Frozen pens or those that have been in excessive heat should not be used and should be discarded instead. This medication is carefully packed and shipped refrigerated to the U.S. when it is purchased from Canada.

Yes. Ozempic is a prescription-only medication. Patients must provide a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider before their order or sale can be processed.
Many patients choose to order Ozempic from licensed Canadian pharmacies or prescription fulfillment services that ship to the United States. Legitimate sellers will require a prescription before the order can be placed. They will also follow strict safety and shipping standards.
Orders from Canada usually take around 7-10 business days to arrive. Those from overseas may take longer. Patients may be able to expedite their shipping to receive their order faster for a fee.
No. Ozempic is not approved for this purpose. However, weight reduction has been observed in many patients using the medication for type 2 diabetes.
Ozempic should only be used as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Weight loss is not an approved use of the medication.
Weight loss results can vary widely between patients. This is not specifically approved as a weight loss medication and results may be different for each patient.
Ozempic (semaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist and is made by Novo Nordisk. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors and is made by Eli Lilly and Company. Both are still used in type 2 diabetes treatment to assist with blood sugar control.
The list price of Ozempic is currently set at around $1,027. Patients paying for this medication without insurance can expect to pay around this amount of money in the U.S. Prices may vary by pharmacy. Online coupons and Canadian prescription fulfillment services or pharmacies may be able to help lower this cost.
Refrigeration is required for Ozempic pens until the first dose is administered. They may then be stored in refrigeration or at room temperature for up to 56 days after they have been opened.
This side effect is not frequently observed with Ozempic use. Some patients experiencing rapid weight loss may notice temporary hair thinning. It may also sometimes occur as a result of nutritional deficiencies or stress on the body from major changes. Patients should speak with their healthcare provider if this becomes a concern.
Some patients may begin to see improvements in blood sugar control within the first few weeks of starting treatment. A1C levels may also decrease over time and weight loss may occur in some patients. Regular monitoring and follow-up with a healthcare provider can help assess effectiveness.
