Symbicort is a prescription medication used for the treatment of asthma and COPD. It improves airflow by relaxing airway muscles and lowering inflammation in the respiratory tract. Patients aged at least 6 years old can use this medication for asthma treatment and this medication may be used for COPD treatment with a prescription for adult patients. Symbicort comes as an inhaler for oral inhalation.
There are several benefits that can be experienced from taking Symbicort.

Patients taking this medication are usually instructed to take two inhalations twice per day of the medication – making up four inhalations total. The inhaler must be primed prior to first use to ensure proper medication delivery. This can be achieved by dispensing two test sprays into the air – directing them away from the face. This same priming routine will need to be done if the inhaler has been out of use for more than seven days or if it has been dropped. Doses of this medication should be taken 12 hours apart from each other – once in the morning and once in the evening. Patients should then rinse their mouths with water and spit it out following each dose of the medication. The rinse water should not be swallowed.
Patients aged 12 years or older taking this medication for asthma may be given a dose of 80 mcg/4.5 mcg twice daily or the maximum dose of 160 mcg/4.5 mcg twice daily. Children under 12 years old (aged at least 6 years old) may be prescribed two inhalations of 80/4.5 mcg twice daily. COPD patients taking this medication are usually prescribed the 160 mcg/4.5 mcg dose. Patients who experience symptoms between doses should use their rescue inhaler for quick relief.
Long-acting beta2-agonists may increase the risk of asthma-related death. This risk primarily applies to LABA monotherapy. Large trials have not shown a significantly increased serious-asthma-event risk when LABA is combined with an inhaled corticosteroid as in Symbicort. This medication should only be used in appropriate patients. This medication is also not for sudden asthma attacks or rapidly worsening symptoms. Using other LABA medications with Symbicort may increase the risk of overdose.
This medication should only be used in patients whose asthma is not adequately controlled with another long-term controller medication. This includes medications such as an inhaled corticosteroid. This medication may also be used for patients who require both an inhaled corticosteroid and a LABA from the start of treatment. However, Symbicort should not be used for patients whose asthma is already well managed with low- or medium-dose inhaled corticosteroids alone.
COPD patients taking this medication may be at increased risk of developing pneumonia. Patients should also be cautious about using this medication if they have existing infections. This includes bacterial or fungal infections. This also includes tuberculosis, parasitic, or viral infections.
Patients switching to this medication after using an oral steroid should make sure to gradually taper these medications to reduce the likelihood of adrenal issues. High doses of this medication or regular doses in specific patients may lead to adrenal suppression or hypercorticism.
Paradoxical bronchospasm can also occur in some patients. Patients should immediately stop this treatment and start a substitute treatment if this occurs. Symbicort should be used with caution in patients with disorders affecting the cardiovascular or nervous systems because of beta-adrenergic stimulation.
Some patients using this medication may experience a decrease in bone mineral density. Bone mineral density of patients using this medication should be assessed before and throughout treatment. Growth should also be monitored in pediatric patients using this medication.
Treatment with Symbicort has been associated with a higher risk of glaucoma and cataracts in some patients. Patients should also be monitored for these issues. This medication also sometimes causes metabolic effects like hypokalemia, eosinophilic conditions, and hyperglycemia. Patients should also use caution when using this medication if they are struggling with convulsive disorders or thyrotoxicosis. The same goes for patients with diabetes mellitus or ketoacidosis. Let a doctor know of any preexisting medical conditions or medications being taken before starting this medication.
Human pregnancy data are limited for this medication. Animal studies showed potential harm to the developing fetus. However, human studies of inhaled budesonide have not demonstrated an increased congenital-abnormality risk and controlled maternal asthma itself carries pregnancy risks. Use during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the baby.
The side effects most likely to be experienced depend on whether the medication is being used for asthma or COPD. For COPD patients, commonly reported side effects include:
For asthma patients, commonly reported side effects include:
Patients should contact their healthcare provider if any side effects persist, become worse, or become concerning. Patients should make sure to properly rinse their mouth after each inhalation of the medication to prevent issues such as oral thrush.
Serious side effects can also occur in some less frequent instances. For example, using too much of LABA medications like Symbicort may lead to issues like:
Patients who do not rinse their mouth with water after using their medication may also be at increased risk of developing oral thrush. This is why they should make sure to rinse with water and spit after each inhalation. However, patients should note that rinsing and spitting after each dose reduces the risk of oral candidiasis but does not guarantee its prevention
Other possible serious side effects include:
Let a doctor know right away if any serious side effects are experienced or seek emergency medical attention in severe cases.
Symbicort may interact with certain medications such as:
Let a doctor know of any medications being used during or before starting treatment.
This medication should be kept in a safe and dry environment with temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Inhalers should be discarded once the inhaler reaches zero or three months after removal from the foil pouch – whichever comes first. A dry cloth should be used every seven days to clean the inhaler by wiping the mouthpiece. The canister for the medication should never be immersed in water. This medication will be carefully shipped in the appropriate packaging when ordered and sent to patients’ homes in the U.S.

No. Symbicort is a maintenance medication that is used regularly to help control asthma or COPD symptoms over time. It is not intended to provide immediate relief during a sudden asthma attack or breathing emergency. Patients should continue to carry and use a rescue inhaler as directed by their healthcare provider.
The price of this medication is often around $250 or more (depending on the seller) for one inhaler. Uninsured patients may be able to lower this cost by using coupons at participating pharmacies or ordering their medication from a licensed Canadian prescription fulfillment service.
Weight gain is not considered to be one of the common side effects of Symbicort. Anyone who experiences unexplained weight changes while using this medication should speak with their healthcare provider.
Symbicort contains budesonide – an inhaled corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation in the airways. It also contains formoterol – a long-acting bronchodilator that helps maintain open airways. Symbicort is often referred to as a steroid inhaler because one of its active ingredients is a corticosteroid.
