Saxenda (liraglutide) is a prescription daily injectable medication that is used to help patients with weight management if they are considered to be obese or overweight with at least one weight-related medical issue. This medication is a type of GLP-1 receptor agonist that has physiological effects on the patient to help them regulate their appetite – making it easier for them to minimize their caloric intake.
There are several different reasons patients may choose to start using Saxenda.

Saxenda comes in the form of an injectable pen medication. The patient’s doses of this medication are usually increased every week until the maximum dose of 3.0 mg is reached. Patients are usually given a 0.6 mg titration dose for the first week and then this dose is increased to 1.2 mg. This dose is then increased to 1.8 mg after another week and to 2.4 mg after an additional week. The final escalation after another week is to a dose of 3.0 mg – the maximum therapeutic dose. The weight should be reassessed 16 weeks after starting in adult patients and Saxenda should be discontinued if the patient has not lost at least 4% of baseline body weight.
This medication is designed to be taken once per day under the skin of the upper arm, stomach, or thigh. The pen for this medication may be used by:
All pens and needles should be properly stored or thrown away after their use. Patients should never allow another person to use their pen. This includes even if a new needle has been attached.
Saxenda comes with a boxed warning that has been issued by the FDA for the medication’s potential to cause C-cell tumors. This effect was observed in studies done with rodents and the exact effects are still unknown for humans. This is why this medication should not be taken by any patient who has previously been diagnosed with Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma. The same goes for any patients who have previously been diagnosed with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 or who has had a family history with either of these issues.
This medication should also not be used by any patients who have a hypersensitivity to liraglutide or any of the other components used to make Saxenda. Patients taking this medication should quickly discontinue if pancreatitis is suspected or has developed. Acute gallbladder disease may also occur in some patients taking this medication. Doctors should run tests to check the gallbladder if a patient shows symptoms that suggest cholelithiasis or cholecystitis.
The risk of patients developing hypoglycemia while taking this medication is increased if they are taking an insulin secretagogue or insulin medication at the same time. Patients who are prescribed a combination of these medications will likely need dosing adjustments before starting Saxenda. Saxenda can also lead to increases in heart rate. Patients using this medication should routinely have their heart rate monitored.
Renal impairment has also occurred in some cases during postmarketing. Patients with renal issues should use extra caution when starting or increasing their doses. Anyone taking this medication with a history of depression or suicidal thoughts should be closely monitored. Saxenda is also contraindicated in pregnant women and has the potential to lead to fetal harm. This medication is also not recommended for use in those who are breastfeeding. Doctors and healthcare providers should be made aware of any conditions the patient has or medications/supplements that the patient is taking before they start Saxenda.
It is not guaranteed that every patient taking Saxenda will experience side effects. However, it is still important that they are aware of some of the most common ones. These include those such as:
Teens taking this medication may also experience common side effects of fever or gastroenteritis. These effects are more rarely experienced by adults taking the medication. Common side effects of the medication are more likely to occur when a patient starts their medication or during dose increases. The body may adjust and symptoms may resolve on their own over time. However, patients should let their doctors know if any of these side effects do not go away on their own or if they become severe.
More serious side effects may also occur in less frequent cases. This includes possible effects such as:
Patients should also be closely monitored if they have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts, as they may worsen while taking this medication. Liquids or foods may also enter the lungs of patients taking this medication during surgical procedures that use deep sedation. Patients should get immediate medical attention if they experience any of these serious side effects from taking Saxenda.
There is a list of specific medication types that Saxenda may interact with. This includes medications that can possibly increase the lowering of blood sugar while taking Saxenda such as:
Taking Saxenda along with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist can also increase the patient’s risk of developing side effects. Patients should let their doctor know about any medications or supplements they have been taking before they start the medication. They should also talk to their healthcare provider about combining these medications if they have any questions.
Unused pens of this medication should be kept in a refrigerated environment with temperature ranging from 36 °F to 46 °F. This is the equivalent of storage temperatures within the range of 2 °C to 8 °C. Pens that have already been used for the first time may continue to be stored in these conditions or they may be moved to be stored at room temperature between 59 °F and 86 °F. This is the same as the medication being stored in temperatures that range from 15 °C to 30 °C.
Any pens that have been used should be discarded after they have been open for 30 days. This includes if there is still some medication remaining inside the pen. This medication should also not be used in the case that it has become frozen or if the expiration date on the packaging has passed. This product is shipped to patients’ homes with careful cold packaging and special handling.
